With cold, short days and dark, long nights making it difficult to leave the home, winter can be the hardest time of the year for those who are experiencing feelings of loneliness and isolation.
That's why, from October to March, we run our Winter Wellbeing project to keep older neighbours in our community warm, active and connected.
It was through this massive Outreach project that we met Tony. He was referred to Winter Wellbeing last December and told us he was feeling lonely and struggling with the cold. We gave him a hat and scarf and connected him to Parin through our Love Your Neighbour programme. A year on, find out how he is doing now...
In order raise money this winter, and reach as many neighbours like Tony, as possible we are taking part in the Big Give Christmas Challenge from 3rd - 10th December. It is a match funding campaign, where for that week donations made to South London Cares will be doubled, allowing your donations to have twice the impact.
Pledge your donation now, so that we know you want to donate during the 3rd-10th December. Then we will get in touch to remind you to donate through our Big Give platform during that week, and your donation will double in size!
Over the next few months, our Outreach Team will:
Talk to over 1,700 older neighbours in Southwark and Lambeth - through knocking on doors and holding community events, to find out how they are coping this winter;
Deliver warm items to older neighbours who are feeling the cold (hats, blankets, scarves, socks, gloves, hot water bottles, flasks);
Award emergency fuel grants of up to £100 to those in the most urgent need;
Signpost older neighbours to partner organisations within the community who can give energy saving advice, or help with deeper issues in the home;
Invite older neighbours to our 25 Social Clubs each month and;
connect neighbours to our Love Your Neighbour friendship matching programme.
All to make sure older neighbours across the boroughs get the support they need to feel warmer, more active and connected this winter. Your donation will enable us to talk to even more neighbours this winter, deliver more items of clothing and host even more community outreach events.
How much should I donate?
Whatever you donate, it will be match funded and have twice the impact, meaning that your gift will go further.
