Introducing Julia - our new Outreach and Engagement Coordinator

I grew up in London and lived in Lambeth for 3 years before moving to Manchester in 2021 to study for my MA in Visual Anthropology. Before my MA, I was working in the arts sector, in film exhibition and most recently I have been working in healthcare.

After finishing my degree, I was keen to meet some new people who knew Manchester better than I did, so I joined Manchester Cares as a younger neighbour and started attending social clubs. I enjoyed it so much that when I saw the job for Outreach & Engagement Coordinator at South London Cares, in the neighbourhood where I used to live, I had to apply!

I loved living in Manchester but it's been a homecoming to return to South London, where most of my family and friends live. Working for South London Cares is allowing me to rediscover my favourite places as well as explore new parts of Lambeth and Southwark.

During my first two weeks at SLC, I attended the Walking Boxing social club with Fleur, run by younger neighbour Dave. I also joined Love Your Neighbour coordinators Lauren and Emily on home visits to meet older neighbours interested in taking part in the programme.

Andy showed me the ropes at my first in-person induction for younger neighbours, welcoming new volunteers who are now ready to attend social clubs and apply for Love Your Neighbour.

My fellow Outreach and Engagement Coordinators up at North London Cares showed me how things are done North of the river and gave me some tips and advice. I listened and danced to some of our neighbours' favourite duets, the theme at this month's Desert Island Discs. At our Love Your Neighbour Catch-Up, I met some of the younger neighbours who participate in the programme, who shared stories and engaged in peer-to-peer learning.

Finally, at the end of my first two weeks, I did my first outreach flyering at the Southwark Park Galleries while visiting their exhibition on the Rotherhithe Shed project!

After a busy fortnight, I'm looking forward to settling into the role and getting to know more of our older and younger neighbours and our community partners. My September highlights will be running my first inductions for younger neighbours and the much-anticipated social club South London Cares: The Musical, run by Dupé.

Going forward I plan to represent South London Cares at more community events and connect with local universities to share volunteering opportunities with students and staff. We have an exciting project launching this autumn with King's College London, where staff and students are invited to write postcards to older neighbours.

If you'd like to talk about outreach or you're a community partner looking to connect, please don't hesitate to get in touch.
