In-person challenges are finally BACK. And we are excited to announce that we have spots for individuals and teams to take part in the famous Santa in the City 5k.
Volunteer and star fundraiser, Ellie, took part in the run in 2019 with her team at work and enjoyed it so much that she joined our own virtual Santa Run last year during lockdown. Read on to find out why she signed up, and what the event was like, below!
What made you sign up for the Santa Run?
“I started volunteering with South London Cares to feel more connected to my community and because I missed my own grandparents. I had done a few charity runs in the past so when I found out about the Santa Run I was really keen to sign up and spread the word.”
How did you manage to get a team together to take part?
At the time I worked for a production company so I sent an email around to get a team of us together. We hadn't ever taken part in an event like this before, so people were really up for doing something new, especially as we had lots of runners in the team. Everyone was very excited and we all had a target of £100, meaning that we ended up raising over £1000!
How does the event work?
“On the day of the event, we all got into our costumes and headed into central London together, to join a crowd of Santa’s. There was something magical about a winter run around London with all the Christmas lights. You could spot Santa’s all over the centre of the city like ‘Where’s Wally’. It made you really feel a part of something! We also all went to the pub together after the event for a well-deserved drink!
Would a beginner be able to take part?
“It is a very easy, flat route and I ran with several beginners. We also brought a little speaker and blasted Christmas songs as we ran - this helped us keep going and encouraged the other runners to sing along too! It was a lot of fun and would highly recommend it to groups of friends and colleagues.”
Ellie and her team ended up raising £1,000 for South London Cares, as well as enjoying a unique experience together as a team - and you could have the same experience this year!
It costs just £1 to register, and this includes your free Santa suit! And if you have taken part in ANY challenge event with South London Cares, it is FREE to register!
