Social Clubs and Activities in August

This August we have 23 social clubs planned, including 8th Birthday Party in Brixton, Documentary Club in Elephant and Castle, botanical sketching in Peckham, and more! Read on to find out more...

There are three different ways to join in the fun:

1. Attend a face-to-face club (marked 👫 in the list below). Please call 0207 118 0404 to book a place or arrange an induction.

2. Take part using a computer, tablet or a smartphone with an internet connection (marked 💻 in the list below). If you’ve got access to the internet at home, you just need to download Zoom to join, which we can support with if you get in touch.

3. Join a virtual club over the phone (marked 📞 in the list below). You can either call Zoom to join the club, or we can call you!

VIRTUAL AND FACE-TO-FACE SOCIAL CLUBS

👫 Tuesday 2nd August, 6-7:30pm: Pub Club – Kennington

Come on in for a refreshing drink, catch up with old pals and make some new ones at our monthly Pub Club. Swap stories and jokes over a tipple, and raise a glass to new friendships.

👫 Wednesday 3rd August, 11am-12:30pm: Brunch Club – Peckham

Join your neighbours for a scrumptious brunch. Come along for a cup of tea, a slice of cake and some great chat in this welcoming corner of Peckham.

👫 Thursday 4th August, 11:45am-1pm: Ballroom & Latin Dancing – Streatham

Get grooving and finesse your Ballroom and Latin steps with Vera the Diva. Expect some light exercise, plenty of fun and some new moves to show your pals. People of all abilities are welcome: absolutely no experience necessary!

👫 Friday 5th August, 2pm-4pm: Documentary Club – Elephant and Castle

Documentaries can be a great visual way to learn about the world we live in, dive into the lives of celebrities or even open up brand new discussion. This week we will be watching episodes 3 & 4 of the critically acclaimed ‘The Last Dance’. In the fall of 1997, Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls allowed a film crew to follow them as they went for their sixth NBA title in eight seasons. That resulted in a stunning portrait of one of the sport's most iconic athletes and most celebrated teams – a must watch whether you’re a sports fan or not.

👫 Saturday 6th August, 12-2:30pm: South London Cares’ 8th Birthday Party – Brixton

South London Cares is turning eight this August! Be prepared to Flower Up for our 70s Summer of Love theme. Enjoy a social dance to your favourite tunes, a raffle and a prize for best dressed. If you can, bring a dish to share with your neighbours!

👫 Monday 8th August, 2:30-4pm: Chair Yoga – Blackfriars

Join us for some light exercise and calming breathing at a yoga club that is perfect for beginners. Expect some gentle stretching as well as plenty of time for a chat.

👫 Tuesday 9th August, 6-7:30pm: Quiz Club – Walworth

Put your knowledge to the test and find a good use for all those facts at our monthly Quiz Club. Team up with your neighbours and laugh your way to victory at this evening of fun and games.

👫 Wednesday 10th August, 11am-1pm: Gardening Club – Streatham

Whether you’re handy with a trowel, are keen to learn more about cultivating plants, or just want to spend some time in a relaxing environment, join us for our Gardening Club. People of all abilities are welcome: absolutely no gardening experience or knowledge necessary!

👫 Wednesday 10th August, 6-7:30pm: Choir Club – Peckham

Join your neighbours for a joyful evening of singing, with no experience necessary! Please note, when you arrive, walk through the small gate to the left of the church on Elm Grove and look out for the door with a big shell above it – we’ll be in there!

👫 Thursday 11th August, 6-7:30pm: Arts & Crafts – Brixton

Put your artistic hat on and get ready for some nostalgia, as we take part in cross stitch. Use a needle and threads of various colours to create images with this technique that has been used as far back as sixth century BC. So, come along, get creative and make something fun to take home.

👫 Saturday 13th August, 2-4pm: Technology Workshop – Peckham

Want to improve your confidence with your phone, tablet or laptop? Come along for a cuppa and bring your gadgets and technology-related questions with you!

👫 Monday 15th August, 6:15-7:45pm: Script Reading – Camberwell

Try out your acting skills at our Script Reading Club. This month we’ll be reading a play first performed in Broadway in 1947 by Tennessee Williams: ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’. The play dramatises the experiences of Blanche DuBois, a former Southern belle who, after encountering a series of personal losses, leaves her once-prosperous situation to move into a shabby apartment in New Orleans rented by her younger sister and brother-in-law.

👫 Tuesday 16th August, 6-7:30pm: Board Games Bonanza – Nunhead

Get ready for an evening of board games with your fellow neighbours. We’ll provide the games and some drinks – all you need to bring is a willingness to have fun!

👫 Wednesday 17th August, 2-4pm: Technology Workshop – Vauxhall

Want to improve your confidence with your phone, tablet or laptop? Come along for a cuppa and bring your gadgets and technology-related questions with you!

👫 Thursday 18th August, 11am-1pm: Bank of America – Workplace Visit

Visit Bank of America for a tour around their lovely offices, followed by hot drinks and a light lunch.

📞 Thursday 18th August, 4-5pm: Coffee & Catch Up

Grab a cuppa, and dial in for an hour of chatting and sharing stories with your younger neighbours over the phone. This month, we’ll be discussing our favourite things about the city we call home: London.

👫 Sunday 21st August, 2-5pm: Film Screening – Bermondsey

Following on from last month’s film, we’ll be watching our favourite furry friend in ‘Paddington 2’. Happily settled with the Brown family, Paddington becomes a popular member of the community. While searching for the perfect present for his beloved Aunt Lucy's 100th birthday, he runs into a spot of trouble.

👫 Monday 22nd August, 1-2pm: Walking Boxing – Vassal

Have you ever wanted to float like a butterfly and sting like a bee? Well, here’s your chance (at a much slower pace, of course). Engage in some non-contact boxing training at a walking pace.

👫 Tuesday 23rd August, 6-7:30pm: Desert Island Discs – Walworth

Like the radio show of its namesake, come with a song in mind and why it’s meaningful to you, or just listen, dance and enjoy the atmosphere! This month’s theme is Carnival Music! No need to bring any records/CDs with you – just the name of the song and artist.

👫 Thursday 25th August, 6-7:30pm: Creative Writing – Clapham

Explore poetry, short story writing and find your voice at our Creative Writing club. Absolutely no writing experience is necessary!

👫 Friday 26th August, 11am-1pm: Botanical Workshop at Bold Tendencies – Peckham

Come along and enjoy some botanical sketching and making of miniature gardens while listening to music at Bold Tendencies, an arts organisation based in a repurposed car park in Peckham.

👫 Wednesday 31st August, 11:30am-12:30pm: Table Tennis Club – Bermondsey

If you have watched Forrest Gump, then you know how fascinating a long rally can be. Come down to Bermondsey and test out your top spin with your neighbours. This club is suitable for beginners!

👫 Wednesday 31st August, 6-7:15pm: Neighbour Feedback Club – Brixton

Join us at this feedback club where you get the chance to discuss the social clubs that you attend each month and help us plan future clubs. Give your input and explore ways in which South London Cares might be able to make your social clubs even more enjoyable.

#ALLTOGETHER ACTIVITY PACK

This month's #AllTogether Activity Pack is full of creative pursuits to complete at home, including including flower pressing, bad poetry and creating your own carnival mask!
