Support our one-to-one friendships this winter ❄️

This winter South London Cares are taking part in a match funding campaign from 1st to 8th December to support one-to-one friendships across south London. These friendships are very important to keep our community connected during this difficult time and beyond.

What are we fundraising for?

All the donations from the Big Give Christmas Challenge will go to our Love Your Neighbour programme, which aims to bridge the divides that can make big cities like London an isolating and lonely place for younger and older neighbours alike. We have quickly adapted to the challenges of COVID-19 by moving this programme to a digital and socially distanced format, called Phone A Friend. Now older and younger friends regularly catch up on the phone to keep each other connected during this disconnecting time.

Why is it important?

Over the past eight months, our friendships have become especially significant for both younger and older neighbours in south London because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Many over 65s have been shielding alone for months and reported loneliness amongst 18-24 year olds has more than doubled since lockdown. But throughout this crisis, we have also found hope in each other. And that is what Love Your Neighbour is all about.

Our one-to-one friendships go way beyond just a conversation. Neighbours in the programme have reported it has helped them maintain a sense of connectedness and belonging to their community. Through our programmes, we also provide extra support to our neighbours with deeper issues they may have in their home, health or mental wellbeing.

How does the Big Give Christmas Challenge work?

The Big Give Christmas Challenge 2020 is a match funding campaign, which will take place from 12pm 1st December 2020 – 12pm 8th December 2020 when donations to participating charities will be doubled. You can help us raise our £10,000 target and support one-to-one friendships at a critical time.

Your donation will support 120 younger and older neighbours in 60 friendships across our community. Just like John (82) and Jemma (34), who share a military connection (John used to be in the forces, and Jemma is now!) They have been staying in touch while Jemma was posted in Cyprus, through FaceTime calls, and letter writing!

How do I take part?

You can pledge your donation now using this form. We will get in touch to remind you to donate online through the Big Give platform during the campaign week - and your donation will instantly double in size!
