As we continue the gentle navigation back to normality, we are excited to announce that we will be trialling a few outdoor face-to-face Social Clubs in Southwark and Lambeth during May. In line with government guidance, the clubs will be small and space will be very limited. We are therefore prioritising the inclusion of older neighbours, but we hope to open the invite to younger neighbours during the middle of the month. Keep an eye on our emails and social media for updates.
And some more good news... we have decided that our Virtual Social Clubs will remain a permanent feature of our Social Club programme. They will complement our face-to-face activities to provide even more opportunities for neighbours in south London to connect with one another.
As with all of our activities, our Virtual Social Clubs are free to join. However, younger neighbours must first complete an induction and older neighbours need to book, so please call us on 0207 118 0404 if you would like to attend. They are now more accessible than ever, with three different ways to join in the fun:
1. Take part using a computer, tablet or a smartphone with an internet connection (marked with 💻 in the list below). If you’ve got access to the internet at home, you just need to download Zoom to join, which we can support with if you get in touch.
2. Take part by dialling in using a phone (marked with 📞 in the list below). If you’ve got a landline or mobile phone, you can join some of our clubs by just calling in.
3. We can phone you directly from any of our phone accessible clubs. So, if you are worried about following the instructions, let us know, and we’ll arrange to call you just before the club starts.
May's programme includes lots of exciting Virtual Social Clubs. We have our first-ever ceilidh, two green-themed clubs and a South London Stories inspired by a 'photo throwback' theme. Alongside these we have all the favourites such as Coffee & Catch Up, Quiz Club, Creative Writing, and more.
💻 📞 Tuesday 4th May, 2-3:15pm: Virtual South London Stories
Grab a cuppa and get to know your neighbours through the use of meaningful conversation-starters. This month the theme will be ‘Photo Throwback Tuesday’, so bring a meaningful photograph of yourself that you would like to share with your neighbours.
💻 Sunday 9th May, 2-4:30pm: Virtual Film Club
Have you ever wondered why society has always perceived sharks as dangerous? Have you ever thought about them as anything else - gentle giants perhaps? Well, one biologist sets out to prove that sharks’ bad reputation is unfair. Find out more about this misunderstood creature in the documentary film ‘Sharkwater’ and the battle they face from poachers.
💻 📞 Tuesday 11th May, 12-1pm: Virtual Technology Workshop
Want to improve your confidence with your phone, tablet or laptop? Join our Zoom chat with your gadgets and bring your technology-related questions with you.
📞 Thursday 13th May, 2:30-3:30pm: Virtual Coffee & Catch Up
Grab a cuppa, and dial in for an hour of chatting and sharing stories with your younger neighbours. This month we will be talking about our proudest moments.
At April's Coffee & Catch Up, neighbours spoke about their favourite fictional stories and characters. Check out how Hugh felt after watching a movie about a certain well-known spy!
💻 Friday 14th May, 12-1pm: Virtual May Day Ceilidh
Are you ready for our first-ever virtual ceilidh dance workshop? We are and we say “Spring it on!”. It’s about time that we get our community together for some hearty dancing to the folk music of May Day. All abilities are welcome – no prior experience is needed – so all you need is yourself, your energy and your enthusiasm, and we will have a fantastic time dancing together.
💻 📞 Monday 17th May, 11:20am-12:30pm: Chair Yoga + Meditation
Uncrank that neck and join your neighbours for some gentle stretching and calming breathing, all from the comfort of your own home.
💻 📞 Tuesday 18th May, 5:30-7pm: Virtual Quiz Club
Embrace the healing properties of mindless trivia and join your neighbours for our Virtual Quiz Club.
💻 Friday 21st May, 12-1pm: Virtual Buy Local Talk
Did you know that there are many fantastic local producers of so many different products in South London? From gins and spirits to farm-fresh greens, to coffee and bakeries: South London has it all! Join your neighbours as we are joined by the company Subship, whose mission is to deliver the best of South London produce to the South London community. Have all your questions answered and learn about all the fantastic things our vibrant community has to offer.
💻 📞 Thursday 27th May, 6-7:15pm: Virtual Creative Writing
Find your voice and stretch your imagination through a spot of poetry and short story writing. No experience necessary.
💻 Thursday 27th May, 6:30-7:30pm: The Cares Family Disco
Get on your party outfit and those dancing shoes and join your neighbours from across the UK at The Cares Family disco! Once a month, we’ll be joining forces with our sister charities in North London, East London, Manchester and Liverpool for a massive party and a good old boogie together.
May's #AloneTogether Activity Pack contains tasks that celebrate London History Day, British Sandwich Week, National Share-a-Story Month, International Dawn Chorus Day and World Bee 🐝 Day. It also includes a poem that was beautifully written by older neighbour Lillian.
You can download the pack here. Please do share with your friends, family, neighbours, tenants, patients, clients, grandparents, and anyone else you think might enjoy a little bit of fun in 2021!
We’d love to include your ideas and completed tasks in our monthly pack, so please continue sending them to [email protected].
Should you have any questions about the clubs or would like to find out more about any of our programmes, then please call us on 0207 118 0404.
