There's nothing quite like laughter. There's nothing quite like relishing in that shared moment of fun between friends, family or – in our case – neighbours. Nothing quite like coming together and having a good old giggle.
Which is why we were chuffed when comedian Stewart Lee offered to head up a comedy night in aid of South London Cares and our sister charity, North London Cares. It seemed like the perfect chance to celebrate friendships formed across our patch, and to raise money to make sure such connections can continue.
And you guys – our fantastic volunteers and supporters – were only too happy to join in the fun. 'Hilarity for Charity' sold out, with 408 of you heading to the Leicester Square Theatre for a night of comedy.
Over three hours on Tuesday 21st March, Stewart Lee welcomed Tony Law, Jessica Fostekew, Norman Lovett, Dane Baptiste and Andy Zaltzman to the stage. Each and every comedian brought the house down as laughter echoed around the auditorium. From observations about laundry, to politics, to eating ice cream in your car, no subject was left untouched.
And they weren't the only stars of the night. The audience met our very Peggy and Inez – older neighbours from Kings Cross. Their cheek and charm certainly gave the comedians a run for their money!
The night was in aid of both charities to help us reach more older neighbours who may feel lonely and isolated. And we're chuffed; £10,507 was raised, which could help fund our social clubs for the rest of the year.
South London Cares is a community network, and as such, this night would not have been possible without the generous support of some wonderful people. A huge thanks must go to:
- Everyone who came along, who donated and who brought a raffle ticket.
- The local businesses who donated a raffle prize – Cupped, Franzina Trattoria and The Ritzy.
- Suppliers The Space Room, GL Print and Red Leaf
- The Leicester Square Theatre
- Tony, Jessica, Norman, Dane and Andy for sharing their time and talent
- Stewart Lee, for putting together a wonderful night of comedy
We look forward to seeing you again next year!
