6 in 2016: New experiences, new friendships

Although in 2016 we hosted a whopping 254 social clubs for older and younger neighbours to share time, laughter and new experiences, each one remains special. And seeing the mood of older neighbours change across the course of a social club, of seeing occasional prickliness with the world turn into smiles can lighten the whole mood of a whole room – younger and older neighbours alike.

Occasionally, there's a doubt that young people would want to give their time to hang out with and build friendships with their older neighbours. Sometimes the activity we're hosting – a brunch club, new tech workshop, a business visit – doesn't immediately appeal to everyone.

But after a couple of hours of kindness and openness, people feel welcome and valued. They feel listened to, visible in a city where too often people can feel anonymous. Neighbours quickly find that they have a new social network, and a new key to the vibrancy of their hometown. People of all ages and backgrounds discover new interests too – in painting and poetry, stories and singing.

It's these moments that make our social clubs so worthwhile, and show that a little community in the big city will always matter.
