NEIGHBOUR

A person or place in relation to others next or near to it; any person in need of one’s help or kindness; a person or place in relation to others next or near to it.

'Charlotte and Frederick are neighbours in Walworth. She pops round to see him every week and they talk about what's going on in their community.'

COMMUNITY

A group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common. The people of a district or country considered collectively, especially in the context of social values and responsibilities; society.

'The Brixton community has changed rapidly over the past few decades. It's a bustling rich mix of cultures, languages and ages. There's a real sense of community, people openly show how much they care.'

CARE

Feel concern or interest; attach importance to something; the provision of what is necessary for the health, welfare, maintenance, and protection of someone or something.

'Younger people care about the wellbeing of their older neighbours, and are interested in helping them out, especially if they experience loneliness.'

LONELINESS

Sadness because one has no friends or company; feelings of depression and loneliness; The fact of being without companions; solitariness.

'Loneliness is a growing problem in London for people of all ages, but we can help to change this with new company, experiences and conversation.'

CONVERSATION

A talk, especially an informal one, between two or more people, in which news and ideas are exchanged. Middle English (in the sense 'living among, familiarity, intimacy').

'Mary and George love a good conversation. They talk about what it was like when she got married in Elephant and Castle during the Blitz - she's part of a different generation.'

GENERATION

All of the people born and living at about the same time, regarded collectively. The average period, generally considered to be about thirty years, in which children grow up, become adults, and have children of their own.

'People of different generations have a lot to learn from one another. Older people have had a lifetime of interesting experiences, and younger people are in the thick of creating their future and making new connections.'


CONNECTION

A relationship in which a person or thing is linked or associated with something else.

'Because London can be an isolating place it can be hard to build new connections. When people can't easily make connections they can become isolated.'

ISOLATION

Cause (a person or place) to be or remain alone or apart from others.

'A lack of contact with other people can cause isolation and prevent people from enjoying life to the fullest. Some people of different ages and abilities are helped to enjoy life with the support of volunteers.'

VOLUNTEER

A person who freely offers to take part in an enterprise or undertake a task.

'South London Cares recruits young people to volunteer to get to know and support their older neighbours. It's easy, fun and you can make a difference in your community.'
