This weekend was jam packed with sport for most people – and at SLC our older neighbours didn't miss out thanks to their younger friends! There's no doubt that sport brings people together.
Like many people, sport has been a mainstay in Richard and Roy's lives. They've both enjoyed cricket up the road from their neighbourhoods in Herne Hill and Peckham at the Oval since they were young. Richard, 82, has been going there for over 60 years!
So imagine how special it was for them to bring their younger friends along to watch a match there! They brought their Love Your Neighbour friends Jack and Joe, who visit each week for a catch up, some company and a cuppa. Sport provides so many significant shared experiences, and there were certainly some good memories made thanks to free tickets from our supporters at Octopus Investments. Roy said: "it was the best night I've had in ages, it's really given me a boost!"
Over in Brixton, older and younger neighbours got together to mark the close of Wimbledon at our regular Saturday social club. Pat, Josephine and Thakor arrived sporting outfits inspired by their favourite tennis champions. Volunteers Mateja, Maria and Jake lived up to expectations with their own versions of tennis whites too!
The purpose of our social clubs is to bring together people of different ages, over 65 and those in their 20s and 30s, for new friendship, experiences and company. But it's also about having fun – something we all need whether we're 25 or 85.
Our older neighbours tell us all the time that seeing their younger neighbours at social clubs is something they really look forward to. Which is handy, because we hear the same from the likes of Lorna, Edward and Amita! Sharing memories, sharing an experience and learning something new all play a part in helping our older neighbours to feel valued and visible.
Thank you to all our brilliant volunteers and amazing older neighbours. We're looking forward to a summer of sport and many more memories made!
