Back in January, Roham invited his older neighbours to visit him at The LSE for pizza and a fascinating lecture to learn about all the exciting events and research going on in the International History Department.
The UCL Folk Society also organised a joyous ceilidh in West Norwood in honour of Burns Night. Check out the amazing dance moves of some of the neighbours here!
In February, Aileen Wong threw an extra special Chinese New Year celebration for her Stockwell neighbours (complete with folktales and a crash course in Mandarin). Thank you Aileen!
Lauren Gasser helped her Elephant & Castle neighbours to relax and recharge at South London Cares' first ever Yoga social club. Beverly told us, "I've always wanted to give this a go!"
In March, we organised our first ever South Bermondsey dance! A massive thank you to Barry Holloway and his band who blew the Old Kent Road away!
We were lucky enough to host a fantastic comedy workshop a couple of weeks ago, kindly organised and run by Jamie for his Brixton neighbours. The Northern line, tapioca and people who squeeze toothpaste from the middle of the tube where just some of the topics our Brixton crew turned into comedy gold
A huge Cares thank you goes to Qaz Mohamedbhai: a South London Cares volunteer, Qaz manages a lot of Day Lewis pharmacies in our patch and has kindly invited us do outreach there. We're really grateful to Qaz for letting us reach even more older neighbours this winter. Thanks to him we've chatted to 20 older neighbours (and counting), new to South London Cares, about keeping connected and warm.
This year, South London Cares has also been working with The Little Angel Theatre to coordinate performances of their new show ‘Me and My Bird’ for our Love Your Neighbour friendship matches. So far they’ve performed to seven of our Love Your Neighbour matches in older neighbours' homes. One of the key aims of the performance is to make theatre more accessible for people who are less able to go out. To find out more about 'Me and My Bird' project here.
Edward (85), said of the performance, ‘’It was wonderful – I haven’t seen anything like it before. It was so unusual and professional. It took me back to being a child and going to watch Punch & Judy with my parents at Southend. They 100% put their heart and soul into it, as if they were a part of it.’’
Thank you so much to The Little Angel Theatre for spreading their magic and happiness to our Love Your Neighbour friends.
It's thanks to the support that we get from the community month in, month out, that we’re able to host fantastic social clubs, reach more older Londoners and invite them to join our network to bring the outside world for people less able to get out and about. You guys rock!
