On Thursday 3rd March, a bunch of you came together to have a laugh for Hilarity for Charity: A South London Cares fundraiser at the Leicester Square Theatre. The gig was headed up by Stewart Lee, who put together a fantastic line-up of comedians to raise some smiles and money in aid of South London Cares.
Doors opened at 6:30pm, and the auditorium quickly began to fill-up. The night was sold out, and we were chuffed to see so many friendly faces at the event; so many volunteers, family, friends, supporters and new faces. We were especially delighted to see Hidden Heroes William and Jean!
Once everyone had a chance to catch-up over a drink, we settled down to some wonderful comedy from compère, Stewart Lee. His BAFTA 'outrage', comments on class and observations on what is stocked in The Works warmed the audience up and had us in stitches. He was followed by 2014 Foster's Edinburgh Comedy Award winner John Kearns, who's absurd comedy and paella anger brought the house down.
After a break, we were treated to the deadpan comedy of Eleanor Tiernan. Her playfully wry observations on feminism and her Irish upbringing made for a unique and hilarious set. She was followed by the evening's surprise guest – the fantastic Kevin Eldon – who's high energy and eccentricity made for much giggling.
Just before the interval, the audience were introduced to Fred; one of our Hidden Heroes, who's visited by Charlotte and Nick each week through our Love Your Neighbour scheme. His wit challenged that of our acts!
Another interval passed and we held a raffle to help raise funds for South London Cares. We had an incredibly generous audience, and equally generous businesses who donated some wonderful prizes. Thanks to OXO Tower Restaurant, Southwark Brewing Co, Time Run, Southbank Centre and Hawksmoor Steakhouse for their goodies.
The evening was rounded off by the immaculately tailored Earl Okin. His musical comedy had us in tears. With a mean invisible trumpet and alternative version of Teenage Dirtbag, he left us going home with a spring in our step.
It was wonderful to see so many old and new faces come together in support of South London Cares. A mighty £5,295 was raised from the night. We're totally chuffed. A big thanks must go to the Leicester Square Theatre for hosting the night; to John Kearns, Eleanor Tiernan, Kevin Eldon and Earl Okin for joining us; and to Stewart Lee for his heart, energy and for putting together such a wonderful bill.
And of course, thank you to everyone who came along, brought a raffle ticket, donated via text (LOLS16 £5 to 70070) and dropped some loose change into our buckets. In doing so, you've helped to tackle isolation on your doorstep. You've helped older neighbours share connections, conversation and company. And – in enjoying some comedy together – you've enabled otherwise lonely neighbours such as Amanda, Richard and Fred to come together too. You rock!
If you want to support South London Cares and help tackle isolation and loneliness in Brixton, Bermondsey and Beyond, please consider donating to the charity. It's amazing what £10 could do:
