Our Love Your Neighbour scheme connects older neighbours and local volunteers who wouldn't have the chance to meet organically. Lupita and Charlotte were introduced through the scheme two months ago – and have been getting on like a house on fire!

Lupita, 69 has lived in Clapham for 40 years since moving to London from Chile. Having had a tough time since becoming blind, Lupita enjoys the things she’s always loved: conversation, company and sharing stories. Lupita has a lot to offer Charlotte too – not least Spanish practice!

“It’s been a joy to get to know her and she’s been invaluable in the moment I’m in. The support of someone so young and so encouraging is very meaningful. We have fun together and I’m delighted with all of the visits. We share things together, about her job and family and about my own life. I feel much more in touch with the world around me. She has brought her own world into mine; her friends and her work in Whitehall. She describes the area she works in, clarifying the map of London for me which I can’t go to anymore. I tell her stories and we share knowledge together. I love speaking Spanish and it’s a pleasure to be able to offer her that practice.”

Charlotte, 23 moved to London eight months ago and was keen to get stuck in with her new job and London life. After a few months settling in she signed up to volunteer with South London Cares to get to know her older neighbours and community in Clapham. Charlotte visits Lupita at her home once a week after work.

“We really get on well together; we have a really good laugh and always have a good time. She’s helped me with my Spanish – and I help her with her shopping, sending emails and reading correspondence. I hear about her childhood in Chile, and hearing her describe how much things have changed in Clapham is really interesting. I kind of forget about the fact that it’s volunteering!”

The Love Your Neighbour scheme is just that: two neighbours of different ages and life stages who may never have met in this busy, full on city but who have lots to offer to one another. It’s about showing someone that they’re valued and appreciated; everyone has something to offer no matter their age. It's friendship.
