Autumn is well and truly here. The clocks are falling back, the pumpkins are carved, the layers are on. With winter approaching, for many older neighbours the risk of isolation becomes exacerbated by the colder weather and the shorter, darker days. For many of our younger volunteers, winter can also be a lonelier time, as the cold makes people want to stay in rather than hang out with friends. This month though, our thanking blog is full of stories of volunteers who have pulled out all the stops to organise fun events for their neighbours and really bring the community together. You guys ❤
One of those volunteers was Katie and her fantastic fellow choristers from the Florence Lawrence Chorus. Over in West Norwood, Katie and the choir treated their neighbours to a song or two (and after an encore, three or four!). On her way out, new neighbour Flora told us, "tonight was my first social club and I really am leaving happy!". So Katie, a big thanks for organising this delightful performance and making the neighbours happy! You can see a clip of the performance here.
A huge thanks is in order to the London Community Boxing in Peckham, who invited the neighbours to learn and try out the sport at a special boxing social club. It was a great two hours of laughs, encouragement, and good exercise! One of the core aims of Social Clubs is to create new, exciting opportunities for our older neighbours and younger volunteers, so when Angie told us "I've never tried anything like this before, and it's been fantastic!", after the club our hearts glowed.
Over in London Bridge, Amy and all the lovely people from The Health Innovation Network invited their neighbours over for afternoon tea and a talk. Favourite sounds, how to check your own pulse and the best things about south London were just a few of the topics covered. Business visits are always a favourite thing for the neighbours to do – so Amy, thank you!
Our volunteers didn’t just organise events, they also came to them! Last week, we held our Cares’ Autumn Clothes Party – a chance for our volunteers to come together, have nibbles and drinks, and bid for a new wardrobe. Thanks to you we raised a mega £349.98 for South London Cares and North London Cares – heroes!
Also holding fundraising events were Tamara, Anna and the fantastic team at HCPC. In order to raise money for South London Cares, they held a silent auction. The team really came together to organise some fantastic prizes, from a nail pampering session with a celebrity nail artist, to meals at great restaurants - the stakes were high. They raised a hugely impressive £985.46, you are stars HCPC!
One of those stars was Ellis, who ran the Oxford Half earlier this month for South London Cares. Not only did he raise an impressive £235, but he also got a personal best, completing the race in 1hour, 49minutes and 16 seconds. It would take us longer to drive 13.1 miles in London Ellis, you are a champ!
On the same day as Ellis took on the Oxford Half, in London at the Royal Parks Half Marathon we had a team of 19 people running - our biggest team ever! A massive thanks to our team, who took on 13.1miles for SLC, helping create lasting shared friendships across Lambeth and Southwark. Together you’ve raised over £7000 for South London Cares, an amount that will make a huge difference to your community. Thank you!
