Every day, our community network inspires us with acts of kindness and friendship. And this month, we want to say a big thank you to some of our supporters who’ve gone the extra mile. In February, Jamie, Theresa, Laura and Amita have laughed, tutored, organised and sung for their local community. They are our February Champions.
Supporter Jamie Oliphant held a comedy night at The Cavendish Arms and gave the proceeds to South London Cares, raising £150 on the night! The laughter is already going a long way, helping us to make our social clubs even more special in March.
Volunteer Theresa came to South London Cares’ first social club back in August 2015 and is still a regular at social clubs from West Norwood to Walworth and beyond. As well as donating her time, she’s also raised over £600 by tutoring students for their entrance exams through Oxfizz. Theresa’s hourly fee has helped make South London Cares’ work possible, from Pat and John chatting with Amy over brunch, to Gloria and Kate boogieing away at our dance evenings.
Love Your Neighbour volunteer Laura invited her older neighbours for a Valentine’s Day afternoon tea at beauty company Ciaté, where she works. No effort was spared: there were sweet treats, champagne, gift bags, manicures and the making of many friendships. Neighbour Betty, who joined us for the first time on that day, celebrated her 94th birthday in style and company As she put it, “I had a bad winter, and this really brought me out of myself!”.
Finally, the singers among you might have noticed that volunteer Amita has been organising our choir sessions since January. Amita’s time, dedication and enthusiasm has seen lots of new neighbours flock to the singing sessions, and she’s even helping choir leader Abigail organise a very special concert for the summer.
Have you been inspired? There are so many ways you can help! Get in touch with Val if you have an idea that you’d like to become a reality. And don’t forget that you can join our Cares’ Cake Week and hold a bake sale in support of South London Cares this March!
