Not a day goes by that our community network doesn’t inspire us with acts of kindness and friendship. And this month, we want to say a big thank you to some of our supporters who’ve gone the extra mile.
On Saturday 3rd June, volunteer Phoebe ran 10k at the Olympic Park to raise money for South London Cares. Elsewhere, volunteers Andreea and Alexandra got doused in colour during the Colour Run. Together, our runners raised over £600 to help fund our summer activities. We could not be more chuffed, especially when they already share laughter, conversation and stories at our Social Clubs.
And while miles were run, on Thursday 8th June, supporter Jamie Oliphant held yet another ‘Vodka Jelly Comedy’ night at The Cavendish Arms and donated the proceeds to South London Cares. And a few weeks later, he led a comedy workshop with the likes of Tony and Rene. Maybe they will be on the stage next?
You could also find comedy in Clapham, as Sion donated the money raised at his his Edinburgh Fringe Festival at the Bread & Roses preview to our neighbours south of the river.
And on Sunday 23rd June, Matt Bird held a DJ night at Club Makossa, raising over £300. You can see him here with Bola, engaging in a conversation about how to cook jollof rice!
But away from the stage, the running track and the dance floor, every month our older neighbours teach us to how to look with different eyes at our corporate offices, science labs, and much more, thanks to our business visits.
Last month volunteer Elin invited 20 of her older neighbours along to visit her at work at the House of Commons. She gave them an insightful behind the scenes tour! Across London, volunteer Rachel shared her chemistry research with her Stockwell neighbours:,showing everyone how to conduct exciting experiments at home!
Thanks must also go to volunteer Sophie too. She went above and beyond in choosing and editing the script for this month's script reading club, as well as leading the club and sharing all her top theatrical tips with her Camberwell neighbours.
And because the sunshine encourages us to get outside and seize the day, volunteer Amber and her older neighbour Irene went for a cake and cuppa at a new cafe that had just opened up the road.
"It felt like holiday!” said Amber. “We both love our tea and cake, and couldn’t choose one cake so we had to get one of each and share (how unfortunate!!)."
