As the days grow shorter and the leaves start to turn, there can be the tendency to think about hibernation (along with ‘how many layers is too many?’). The same cannot be said for the fantastic volunteers who have tirelessly fundraised, baked, held social clubs, business visits and celidih’s for our community network (seriously, what is in your tea?! We want some!)
We love it when volunteers reach out to us and ask to organise one of the many social clubs we run. Thanks to comedian and South London Cares volunteer Jamie, our neighbours shared plenty of laughter in Brixton early in September. He organised a third comedy workshop for his neighbours that proved to be another great success!
Over in West Norwood, the UCL Folk Society provided some beautiful (and lively!) celidih entertainment for their older and younger neighbours at our Celtic Dance. The evening was captured by volunteer and professional photographer Louise, who took wonderful photos. They really capture the joy of younger and older neighbours coming together to laugh and be merry!
Business visits keep our Social Clubs programme fresh and exciting – and they simply wouldn’t exist without the generosity of our younger volunteers. Ben at AlixPartners combined two of our favourite things and organised a bake-off style business visit for his older neighbours. Theresa and her mates had a great time, learning all about the ins and outs of the company. "Fascinating! And such lovely people!"
Over at Octopus Investments, Natalia and Sam invited their neighbours from South London Cares and our sister charity, North London Cares to their office. Betty and co were treated to delicious cakes, copious cups of tea and an insight into the investments world.
Finally, Steph Invited her older neighbours to visit her at work at MEC UK. Look at that view! As she was leaving, Gloria said “I never had any idea what went on in these offices before trips like today. It's eye opening, everyone was so friendly, and it makes me feel like I know London more. I can't get enough!"
We had some really amazing fundraising efforts from across our south London network over September. At the beginning of the month, Tamara took on the Thames Bridges Trek raising £182.61 for South London Cares. And if that wasn’t enough, in October she’s also running the Royal Parks Half in our name. What a hero!
Elsewhere, Mark and a team of cyclists from Octopus Giving took on 40, 80 and 130km of the Kentish countryside. They raised £440 for both South London Cares and North London Cares, making the sore bums and tired legs worth it!
And the challenges didn’t stop there. On Sunday 24th September, Katie took on the Robin Hood Half Marathon in her home turf of Nottingham. Not only did she beat her PB, but Katie raised a fantastic £860 for South London Cares. Katie, you’re seriously great!
Sport wasn’t the only way volunteers raised money for South London Cares. The fantastic Jo donated all of the profits from her artistic Coll-Fest event South London Cares – a whopping £391.60. Thank you Jo, for getting creative and donating to us so generously.
Everyone who helps with social clubs, organises business visits, takes on a challenge and fundraises for us truly impacts the charity and helps to create lasting shared friendships across Southwark and Lambeth. A massive thanks to our September champions!
