We can help you find a way to share the love in February! It may still be a bit grey, cold and wet but you don't need to look that far to experience something heart warming...
We regularly connect people who've lived in south London for anywhere from 4 months to 90 years and all in between - a huge difference in time during which our city has changed so much.
But our volunteers and our older neighbours have a lot more in common with each other than they might think. First off - a love of south London, it's people and it's eccentricities. Sometimes we've found that people have a profession in common, lived on the same street or travelled to the same city abroad...
There are plenty of opportunities in the next month to get to know your older neighbours at our social clubs and one to one through our Love Your Neighbour project. We've got film nights, a Valentine's baking session, a dinner party, a new technology workshop and many more!
Our older neighbours tell us how much they appreciate the time that our young volunteers spend with them. They love the company and conversation and they tell us that it gives them an extra thing to look forward to. We're always looking for volunteers to help make tea, dish out piping hot meals (or popcorn) and most importantly to spend time with our older neighbours and finding out new interesting things about the south London they love.
A report out earlier this week by the Campaign to End Loneliness and Age UK reported that "older people spend more time in their immediate neighbourhood and often feel a higher degree of commitment to their neighbourhood, making the immediate locality an extremely significant influence on their wellbeing."
We know that the benefits of social interaction for people who have few social opportunities and connections in their community can be significant. Join our network of young people getting together to spread the love for neighbourlinessacross south London.
It's been a brilliant start to the new year so far with more volunteers signing up this month than we've had so far - and lots of our volunteers keen to get involved in our social clubs and Love Your Neighbour project. See you soon!
Love Tess and Hannah
