What will you be doing on your 94th birthday?

Please note: this post is 128 months old and The Cares Family is no longer operational. This post is shared for information only

Over the past month some of our older neighbours have celebrated their birthdays with the South London Cares family! Whether it's been cake and a cuppa or a visit out and about with 30 neighbours - it's a privilege to celebrate with someone reaching their 80s or 90s.

Frances went big for her 94th birthday. She joined a group of 30 other south Londoners visiting the Southbank Centre to enjoy a day of Indonesian and African music. Neighbours ranging from age 23 to 94 enjoyed each other's company and the vibrant scenes created by our capital's largest single-run arts centre. Frances comes to several Social Clubs each month - and it's fair to say, is the life and soul of the party. A birthday celebrated with gusto!

A couple of weeks later, Fred turned 93! Amongst other visits, he had a visit from his friend Charlotte - one of our Love Your Neighbour volunteers. Charlotte has known Fred for nearly 10 months, and visits every week for chats, tea and a game of dominoes. Fred told us he was "proud as punch" to have had such a fun birthday. Meanwhile, Charlotte said she felt lucky to be part of his day.

Vi got competitive on her 75th birthday at a games night. It's not every day you get to test your knowledge on local history, food facts and celebrity goings on with your older neighbours. Vi comes to a few Social Clubs each month to catch up and chat with friends and neighbours, and to meet new ones. She's a great cook and always gets the food questions right - congratulations to her winning team!

Richard celebrated his 82nd birthday with friends, poetry and cake. His birthday was spread out over several days with family celebrations, and on the day a visit from Emily who goes to see him every week. Richard tucked into homemade lemon drizzle cake, recited poetry and did what he does best: had a laugh.

These guys are just a few of the amazing older neighbours we're lucky to know across south London. They've lived long lives through times we can't begin to imagine, and have the stories to go with it. Our volunteers spend quality time creating moments of fun and enjoyable conversations we all need to keep us going. You can join the SLC gang at Social Clubs or through Love Your Neighbour.
