We’ve always known that South London Cares volunteers are a special bunch. Week in, week out you are the life and soul of social clubs and the backbone of Love Your Neighbour, putting smiles on the faces of older neighbours across Southwark and Lambeth with your warmth and kindness.
If charities could run on spirit alone we would be rolling in riches, but we need cold hard cash too! As a small local charity, South London Cares relies on the support of the community to help us raise the funds we need to run the programmes that mean Paulette can get crafty in Stockwell and Lee will be singing Spice Girls songs in Peckham.
That’s why this month, we asked our amazing volunteers to help us and our older neighbours in a slightly different way with 7 Days to Raise. We couldn’t be more chuffed with the amazing lengths the South London Cares family has gone to. You have helped us to bring in hundreds of pounds, every penny of which will go towards making sure that Richard, Jacquie, Tony, Benita, Rene and all of our older neighbours have loads of fun this summer.
If there’s one thing we learned this week, it’s that south London loves a bake sale! We solemnly salute your commitment to cake. Beth, Marie, Lorna, Tess and Charlie all fired up the ovens to produce the most mouth-watering array of baked goodies. From cupcakes to traybakes, brownies to flapjacks, the office workers of south London were treated to a sweet feast like never before and they turned out in their droves, forking over the cash for a forkful of sponge.
Lest you think that all everyone did is eat cake this week, never fear. Cassie and Joe took on the incredible Lake District Challenge - a canoe, swim and cycle over some seriously tough peaks. And Jenny did us all proud by owning the Hackney Half Marathon on the hottest day of the year. We’re hoping that just by cheering them from the sidelines we might have burned off a bit of that cake.
All that joy has raised over £1,400 for South London Cares!
We want to say a huge ‘thank you’ on behalf of the South London Cares team and all our older neighbours to everyone who has worked so hard to make 7 Days to Raise a roaring success.
And if you’re inspired by these brilliant stories, it’s not too late to get involved. You can run an event like this any day of the year and we will always be here to support you.
