May was a month of dances and long pub chats – a month of friendships formed over long, summer evenings. But very little of this would be possible without our supporters, who help us make friendships bloom across our patch.
Volunteer Julia and The Adam Street Singers opened the month in style, with a musical extravaganza at the Battersea Barge. Their concert raised £443, and as this could help us fund two weeks of social clubs, it’s all music to our ears!
On Sunday 6th May, Earl embarked on the legendary Tough Mudder, probably the toughest run on the planet, tackling 12 muddy miles and jumping obstacles.
And with over £200 raised for his neighbours south of the river, he certainly made every step count.
And many more miles were walked by the wonderful South London Cares London 2 Brighton team. 11 supporters joined our sister charity, North London Cares, to walk 50km or 100km in aid of the charities. Now an annual event for South London Cares, it was great to come together to endure the gruelling miles to raise money to make friendships across our patch possible.
And while walking mile upon mile for their neighbours south and north of the river, the red and blue bunch exchanged anecdotes, stories, and even phone numbers.
A big cheer to those who walked 50k – Alex, Jasmin, Val, Steph and James – and a huge hooray to our 100k champions; Aimee, Sandra, Rosie, Dave, Mateja and Rob.
And while kilometres were conquered, many of our friends went the extra mile without walking or running.
Volunteers Donal and Annabel helped us by offering their technological expertise. Thanks to their helpful insight, the social clubs team are now well on their way to finding a new portable (and reliable!) internet connection for our technology workshops.
Last but not least, down in Surrey Quay our Love Your Neighbour volunteer Lizzie surprised her neighbour Francis with an impromptu trip to Southwark Park for a hot chocolate, followed by a shopping session.
And when neighbour Patricia had to go to the hospital, volunteer Helene did not hesitate to go with her for support.
We got this lovely selfie from them, which proves that when friends are around, we can’t help but smile.
Did our champions inspire you? Well, you could be next!
